Description

Forming part of a larger wooded area, Riddle Wood is located in tranquil rural Devon and represents a fine example of amenity woodland with excellent opportunity for occasional timber extraction if desired. Access is through a locked gate and along a track.

Situated over northern facing slopes on freely draining loamy soils, its lofty canopy to the south comprises impressive Douglas fir, Norway spruce and beech with holly and rowan making up the shrub layer below. To the north is a blend of birch, hazel coppice, rowan, cherry, ash, sweet chestnut and oak - some of this could provide a good source of fuel for a new custodian. A picnic bench has been placed at a delightful level spot on the banks of the stream where there are also tall poplar stems and large ash. The ground layer is brimming with lush pollen providers; foxglove, primrose, fragrant honeysuckle, gorse, eagle fern, male fern and fruitful blackberry are all in abundance.  

A network of mowed grassy footpaths lead throughout the woodland allowing access to most areas and some beautiful grassy openings that could accommodate beehives. The level area near the stream would make a beautiful spot for a night or two under the canvas. Dragonflies are often spotted here.

Feathered visitors include owl, buzzard, wood pigeon, skylark and green woodpecker to name a few, along with numerous harmonious songsters. The rich mammal population includes deer (muntjac, fallow, and roe) badger, hare, fox and wood mouse.


If It Were Mine

My initial visits to the woodland would definitely include camping! Riddle Wood is ideal for foraging; the yellow gorse flowers have a nice peppery flavour and work well in salad and of course the ever popular blackberry jam! Once I have spent time getting to know and understand my woodland I might select one of the fabulous Douglas fir stems to be carefully felled and milled on site for any number of uses.

Residential Planning Permission

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.


Directions & Access

  • From junction 31 of the M5, head west along the A30 towards Oakhampton.
  • After 10 miles, take the exit signposted for Cheriton Bishop, Crockernwell, Drewsteignton, and Fingle Bridge and take the first left at the roundabout at the top of the slip road for Cheriton Bishop.
  • After 0.5 miles you will arrive in Cheriton Bishop, continue into the village passing The Old Coach Inn pub and turn right shortly after, just past the stone cross war memorial, sign posted for Holly Farm, the Surgery, Village Hall and Yeoford.
  • Continue along the road and out of the village passing over the crossroads and then over the A30, heading toward Yeoford, Crediton and Holly Farm.    
  • Four hundred metres beyond the bridge over the A30, there is a turning onto a track with a ‘number 15’ on the wooden Bridleway post (point X on the plan below), directly opposite a residential access for Cross Farm with white stone posts and black gates.
  • Continue down the track passing the ‘Fray Bentos’ container and an access gate into a field on the left.
  • After 125 metres you will arrive at a wooden five bar gate ahead of you and a fork in the track (point Y), take the fork to the right following the bridleway.
  • Continue along the track passing two further wooden five bar gates either side, with the track sloping down just after.
  • After 400 metres you will arrive at a turning on the left (point Z) with some post and rail fencing and a grass pull-in with more post and rail fencing and our Woods4Sale sign beyond.
  • Please park in a safe place not obstructing any access nor the bridleway.
  • Climb over the wooden five bar gate (point A) and the woodland is to the right of the track.

Boundaries

  • The northeastern boundary is indicated by blue paint on occasional trees with the bridleway and further woodland beyond.
  • The southeastern boundary AB is indicated by blue paint on occasional trees for the most part the inside edge of the track.
  • The southwestern boundary is indicated by blue paint on occasional wooden posts and trees.
  • The northern boundary is indicated by blue paint on occasional trees for the most part following the southern bank of the stream.
