Description
Located to the east of Banwell village, Rhyne Wood is not far from the spa city of Bath in rural North Somerset and is accessed through locked wooden gates.
Situated on north facing slopes among flinty loamy soils, the mature canopy encompasses ash, oak, beech, sycamore, cherry and occasional larch. Within the shrub layer beneath you will discover hazel coppice, holly, field maple, and hawthorn as well as a smattering of younger sycamore and ash. Come warmer months the ground layer is adorned with Ancient Woodland indicators comprising bluebells, wood anemones and dog’s mercury, followed by heady wild garlic; terrific for producing a few jars of homemade pesto. Hart’s tongue and broad buckler-fern are common here too. A new custodian could consider selecting a stem or two of ash for a stock of fuel.
The entirety of Rhyne Wood is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI); a number of areas within the woodland were historically mined for ochre between 1930 up until 1948, some of these remarkable mine shafts are still open or collapsed but are now fenced off. Please take care when visiting the woodland.
A bat survey carried out in February 2023 revealed resident roosting bats within the redundant caves and shafts. Approximately 220 great horseshoes and 32 lesser horseshoes were counted at the time of the survey.
More common woodland creatures include a variety of feathered visitors include tree pipit, owl, buzzard and numerous acoustic songsters. Mammals regularly spotted include roe and muntjac deer, badger, fox, hare and grey squirrel.
Between the trees you can enjoy occasional glimpses of the River Severn. There are level spots to the north and south that could make nice camping areas as well as places to hone bushcraft skills.
If It Were Mine
The conservation value of this special woodland speaks for itself. It is a lovely area to lie quietly on a warm day in a hammock strung between two trees and observe woodland life. I would place a trail camera or two near the caves to monitor any bat activity. I would consider creating a path to the top of the woodland and maybe some steps up to a few of the caves. Ash logs could be collected and seasoned for the log burner at home.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
