Description

Parrett Copse is a charming woodland, consisting of a mixture of species of mainly broadleaf trees, and forms part of a larger ancient woodland. It is situated on the southern edge of Banwell Hill, which is found not far from the village of Banwell in North Somerset.  The hard surfaced tracks allow access to your woodland in a two wheeled drive vehicle all year-round.

Mature oak and ash form the greater part of the canopy, but amongst these you will also come across European larch, Lawson cypress, wild cherry, the occasional holly shrub and on the southern boundary, a line of coppiced hazel trees. Although it is suspected a few of the conifer trees were planted by hand, the broadleaves have self-seeded providing a natural look and feel as you walk under the canopy.

In spring, the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells, creating a sea of purple and blue on a backdrop of green, replaced by a swathe of white wild garlic flowers later in the year; a truly amazing time to wander through the woodland. Dotted throughout you will also find primrose, wood anemone and a variety of mosses.

As you would imagine, the woodland attracts and is home to a variety of animals and birds, and a keen eye will see plenty of signs of foraging badgers, foxes hunting, and the tracks of the local roe deer population. Flying in amongst the treetops, you may find the rare lesser horseshoe bat - although it has been noted to roost elsewhere in the wider woodland, it most certainly hunts throughout it.

Parrett Copse is found on deep and fertile brown earth soils, on a south facing slope, and has views out towards Wavering Down and Crook Peak that form the North Somerset boundary. The woodland slopes down towards the southern boundary but levels out with a relatively level lower section where you will find a soft track running east to west. This could be an alternative route to extract timber utilising the Forestry Commission thinning licence that is already in place.

If It Were Mine

I would fell a few trees nearer the top of the woodland, install a bench or seating area and enjoy the views out to the south.

I would also start harvesting some of the ash in the woodland to keep my wood stocks at home full during the winter months.

Directions & Access

• From Banwell village, head east on the A368 towards Sandford.
• After approximately half a mile, you will see a layby on the right-hand side with a double wooden gate set back and Wood4Sale sign (point A on the plan below).  
• Please park safely in front of one of the gates, ensuring there is clear vehicular access through the other for key holders (sorry, we do not provide keys for viewings).
• Climb the gate and turn immediately right, continue along the track and up the hill.
• After roughly half a mile you will reach a T junction (point B) with the ruins of a cottage set back to the right.  
• Turn right, passing a turning to the right down to the cottage and within a short distance you will see a line of wooden stakes painted white (the first post having both green and a bit of white on it, (points C - D), this is the northern boundary.
• A little further on is a layby, this is the entrance into the woodland.

Boundaries

• The north boundary is indicated by green paint on wooden posts on the northern edge of the track which may be off-set by a short distance.
• The south boundary is the low earth bund with fields beyond.
• The east boundary is indicated by white paint on trees and wooden posts.
• The west boundary is indicated by pink paint on trees and wooden posts.

• There is a right of way granted at all times and for all purposes over the route ABC.
• There is a right of way granted at all times for forestry purposes only over the route BGF.
• There is a right of way reserved to others for forestry purposes only over EF.
• A right of way is reserved to others over the route CD.
• A maintenance clause covers all shared rights of way with liability according to use.
• There are no public rights of way in this woodland.

Tree Preservation Order

The woodland is designated as an Ancient Woodland and is subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). This does not prevent appropriate tree felling. However, the agreement of the local Tree Officer must be obtained in advance.
