Description

Australia Copse lies just above the tidal extent of Ponsontuel Creek on the upper reach of the Helford River. The attractive hamlet of Gweek is just round the corner, Falmouth is 20 minutes by car and the county town of Truro is half an hour to the north.

The wood is on the northern edge of The Lizard Heritage Coast and within the Cornish Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A visit will soon confirm the validity of both these designations.

The majority of the wood occupies level ground on the east bank of a good-sized stream. The sheltered conditions support a range of hardwood species including some striking full-canopy beech. Other species benefitting from this fertile site include elm, sycamore and ash, along with some alder on the stream bank. In the under-canopy are a number of saplings, along with holly, laurel and some emerging yew stems. In spring, much of the woodland floor is transformed by a haze of bluebells.

The vendor reports a healthy array of wildlife in the vicinity including roe deer and badger, plus a variety of birds from the tiny firecrest to the mighty raven…and many others besides.

With elegant stems, flowing water, level ground, easy access and the estuary close at hand, this pocket wood is an ideal candidate for those seeking a foothold in this corner of Cornwall.

If It Were Mine

Being inclined to conservation I would aim to remove the exotic laurels and then develop the understorey by planting a few native shrubs and hardwoods where light levels allow. With plenty of clear open level ground, camping and streamside BBQs would also feature.
