Starlight Wood forms part of a larger woodland known as Bowers Grove and sits a short distance to the west of Four Marks village in rural Hampshire. It is accessed through a locked streel gate and along a track.

Located on gently sloping chalky and flint soils, its mature canopy contains majestic beech, ash, sycamore, oak, birch and the occasional cherry. A smattering of conifer can also be found, namely larch, Norway spruce and yew. The shrub layer is made up of hazel coppice, hawthorn, holly and prolific patches of regenerating sycamore and ash. Sycamore produces a lovely, yet somewhat underrated timber that if grown carefully and straight, is useful for woodcraft and can be fashioned with both hand and machine tools. Selecting one of the better sycamore stems for domestic flooring may be a consideration. When the drier months arrive, a colourful patchwork of ground flora includes bluebell, wood anemone, primrose, dog’s mercury and aromatic wild garlic, perfect for some homemade pesto.

Aided by the Forestry Commission thinning licence, some of the ash could be gently thinned and would be perfect for domestic fuel. A bell tent for camping could be pitched near the southeast where far reaching rural views can be glimpsed, just beyond the heritage Watercress Line. One may be able to see a puffing steam locomotive or hear a toot as it passes.

Woodland mammals include muntjac, roe and fallow deer, yellow-necked mouse, badger, hare and fox. A diverse feather population seen and heard in this tranquil setting includes greenfinch, treecreeper, woodpecker, owl and many harmonious songsters.

If It Were Mine

Carefully controlled campfires here are a definite, as well as barbeques with friends and family. A rope swing from a sturdy tree limb is a thought. Setting up a few trail cameras on trees to monitor wildlife movement would be interesting. With the appropriate research and permissions in place, I would investigate creating a shed to house my tools to assist with light woodland management.

Residential Planning Permission

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.

Directions & Access

  • From Four Marks, drive west on the A31 out of the village and along the short stretch of dual carriageway.
  • Shortly after the road returns to a single carriageway, turn right just after a bus stop and opposite a red brick and flint wall, sign posted towards Bighton.
  • Continue along Bowers Grove Lane passing under a railway bridge.
  • After 0.4 miles where the road bears sharply right, continue straight ahead onto the track into the woodland arriving at a locked gate with post and rail fencing, next to some young trees and a Woods4Sale board (point A on the plan below).
  • Please park in a safe place not obstructing any traffic, the gate or access points.
  • Climb over the gate (sorry we do not provide keys for viewings) and continue along the track southwest through the woodland.
  • After 265 metres you will arrive at Starlight Wood on the left, indicated by green, red and yellow paint on a wooden post (point B).


  • The northwest boundary is the inside edge of the track indicated by green paint on occasional trees and wooden posts that may be offset by a short distance.
  • The northeastern boundary is indicated by red paint on occasional wooden posts, trees and a concrete fence post.
  • The southwestern boundary follows an occasional low earth bund on the north-eastern edge of a woodland ride, indicated by blue paint on occasional wooden posts and trees.
  • The southeast boundary is the wire fence with concrete posts and the Heritage Railway beyond.

Sporting Rights

  • The hunting rights are reserved to a third party who is permitted to access this woodland and wider woodland to hunt up to 6 times between 1st September and 31st March.
  • A maintenance clause covers all the rights of way within the woodland, with liability according to use and this also applies to the hunt.

Mineral Rights

The mineral rights are owned and included in the sale except as reserved by statute.

Rights Of Way

  • There is a right of way granted for all times and for all purposes over the route ABC.
  • There are no public rights of way within this woodland.
  • A maintenance clause covers all the shared rights of way with liability according to use.
