Description

Part of a larger gated woodland, designated as a Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS), Holly Blue Wood is situated a short distance north from the town of Andover in rural north Hampshire.

Located over gentle western facing slopes amongst chalky and flint soils, its mature canopy is largely occupied by majestic beech - a species often used in furniture production, turnery, and flooring. It also reproduces successfully under canopy shade (evidenced in the lower canopy here). In the shrub layer you will discover holly, hazel coppice and hawthorn. The western side has a more significant amount of older hazel coppice, which could perhaps be used for charcoal making. Floral ground dwellers comprise bluebell, foxglove, primrose, dog’s mercury, bramble and fern, providing nourishment for our essential pollinators.

Gentle undulations and hollows occur throughout, possibly hinting at historical management from bygone days. Farmland views are glimpsed from the southern boundary, and could be a nice place to camp under the stars.

The mammal populace is made up of muntjac and fallow deer, badger, wood mouse, fox and hare. A range of feathered visitors include warbler, skylark, tree pipit, green woodpecker and many warbling songbirds.

If It Were Mine

I would consider felling a large beech stem to supply a good stock of fuel for the hearth, bringing a mobile mill trailer to the wood to help with this. The hazel has many uses for bushcraft projects and there is a fair amount to hand of varying age. ‘Leave no trace’ camping adventures in the warmer months with family and friends would be perfect here.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
