Description

Located a short distance north of the pretty village of Ropley, Drawbar Wood is part of a larger wooded area known as Bowers Grove. Access to the woodland is via a locked steel gate.

Situated over predominantly level flint and chalk soils, the mature canopy has a nice blend of both broadleaves and conifer including beech, ash, oak, cherry, birch, sycamore, Scots pine and larch. In the shrub layer below, you will find hazel coppice and hawthorn, along with clumps of ash and sycamore regeneration.  With plenty to hand, the hazel coppice could certainly provide a good source of bushcraft and horticultural material.

The woodland is designated as a Plantation on an Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS), indicated by patches of bluebells, along with other colourful ground dwellers including wood anemone, lily of the valley, primrose, lesser celandine and aromatic garlic. The Forestry Commission thinning licence (valid until March 2026) over the woodland could be used to generate a fuel stock - selecting an ash or two would be an idea as this species with its low moisture content can largely be burnt green.

Grassy areas can be found throughout with the occasional gentle undulation.  If strimmed, one of these might make a nice place for a bell tent. Rural vistas can be glimpsed close to the northern boundary, ideal for a picnic bench. From time to time, a keen ear may hear the ‘toot’ of a steam engine from the nearby heritage Watercress Line.

Feathered frequenters such as greenfinch, treecreeper, woodpecker, owl and many harmonious songsters have been seen and heard in this serene location. Mammals known to visit the woodland include muntjac, roe and fallow deer, yellow-necked mouse, badger, hare and fox.

If It Were Mine

Camping here is a must - there is certainly scope for some areas that could be cleared for this. With appropriate permissions, a tool store could be built for light woodland management purposes and storage of firewood. I would certainly look into mounting trail cameras to some trees, to observe wildlife movements through the wood.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
