Description

Encompassed by a larger woodland known as Bowers Grove, Tender Wood stands a short distance west from the village of Four Marks in rural Hampshire. Access to the woodland is via a locked gate and along a track.

Established over gentle south-eastern facing slopes upon chalky and flint soils, the mature canopy consists of lofty beech, ash, sycamore, oak, birch and the occasional cherry. Occupying the shrub layer you will find hazel coppice, hawthorn, holly and patches of regenerating sycamore and ash. Sycamore produces a great and somewhat underrated timber that if grown carefully to maturity, is useful for woodcraft and can be shaped with both hand and machine tools. Yielding one of the straighter trees for flooring and furniture projects may be a consideration. Come spring and summer ground flora includes patches of bluebell, wood anemone, primrose, dog’s mercury and aromatic wild garlic, ideal for a batch or two of strong homemade pesto.

A Forestry Commission thinning licence presently in place means a large ash or two could be felled for an almost immediate supply of logs - ash burns fairly well when green due to its low moisture content. Located in the north-eastern corner is a historic marker stone believed to have once been part of Winchester College - the new woodland custodian might like to look into this a bit more. The heritage Watercress Line runs just outside the south-eastern boundary, one may be able to see a puffing steam locomotive or hear the occasional toot as it passes.

A diversity of feathered patrons such as greenfinch, treecreeper, woodpecker, owl and many musical songsters have been seen and heard in this peaceful setting. Woodland mammals include muntjac, roe and fallow deer, yellow-necked mouse, badger, hare and fox.

If It Were Mine

Overnights here are a certainty, I would think about clearing an area close to the south-eastern boundary for this, perhaps removing some of the bush and shrub to expose the lovely views, a perfect place for a picnic bench too. A parachute hung between trees would make a simple shelter. Fuel gathering would be one of my tasks, perhaps splitting logs on site ready for seasoning at home.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
