Description
Goldspur Copse is situated 5.5 miles southeast from the pretty village of Robertsbridge in rural East Sussex. Access is via a locked gate and along a track.
Located over gentle south facing slopes amongst loamy clays, the lofty canopy comprises majestic oak, sweet chestnut, ash, hornbeam and birch. Poplar is also present, it is a fast-growing broadleaf species with a timber known to have a high moisture content, making it a good material for flooring around the hearth.
A new custodian could select some of the hornbeam for logs to fuel the burner at home once seasoned. (A Forestry Commission thinning licence is in place until late 2030.) Hazel coppice, holly and hawthorn occupy the shrub layer. During spring and summer the ground layer is a tableau of Ancient Woodland indicators including ribbons of bluebell, wood anemones, primrose, enchanter's nightshade, fragrant honeysuckle and you cannot help but notice the distinctive aroma of wild garlic.
The current owner has enjoyed camping towards the south of the woodland on the level ground close to a meandering stream, a lovely location for this. Part of the eastern boundary is flanked by a seasonal stream.
Deer (muntjac, roe and fallow), wood mouse, badger, fox and hare make up the mammal inhabitants. Feathered frequenters such as green woodpecker, owl, buzzard, greenfinch and numerous harmonious songsters delight in the peaceful setting.
If It Were Mine
Making batches of wild garlic pesto is a must, there’s plenty to hand. Camping here in the warmer months would be perfect with perhaps a story or two before bedtime round a responsible fire. I would consider setting up a trail camera to observe wildlife – it is amazing to look at the creatures who call a woodland their home when no humans present!
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
