Description
Tusker Wood is a young mixed broadleaf woodland that consists mostly of silver birch, willow and oak. These have either been planted or have naturally regenerated over the last 15 years since the felling of the original plantation of Scots pine and western hemlock. There has been no management intervention in this time other than what was necessary to retain access along the main tracks. Dotted throughout are the occasional western hemlock and Scots pine attempting to break through the canopy of denser and faster growing birch and willow.
A dew pond can be found on the southeast side of the woodland and has become a bit overgrown over the years. It would benefit from being cleared out to allow sunlight to reach the area and perhaps encourage some wildflowers or other wetland plants to grow.
Access to the woodland is directly off the main road through a private gated entrance at the northwest corner and along a track which continues along the southwest boundary. The woodland to the south has access along part of the track from the southwest corner. Internally the woodland is quite dense, and there are minimal tracks other than those created by the local animal inhabitants. Deer and boar populate the area in relatively low numbers following the successful management by the current owner to keep their population levels low. A few covered high towers used when stalking can be seen in places around the wider woodland. The number of deer and boar will likely increase if population control is not continued.
The woodland is essentially flat and with the dominance of the overhead trees the ground flora is relatively kept in check and consists of mostly of bluebells and wild garlic in the spring, bramble, wild grasses and mosses.
Tusker wood is a lovely mixed broadleaf woodland that is perfectly suited for a weekend woodsperson looking for a nice, secluded place to fell some trees for firewood, carry out some woodland management and perhaps do a bit of wildlife watching.
If It Were Mine
The broadleaves need to be thinned as they have grown too dense and tall. This would produce a nice amount of firewood that could be stacked and seasoned in the woodland.
I would also look to clear out the pond and make that a lovely feature, whether to attract wildlife or as a place to camp on the weekends – or both!
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
