Harpley Wood is located 5.5 miles southeast of the historic village of Robertsbridge in rural East Sussex and is part of a larger gated woodland, accessed along a stone track.

Situated among loamy clays on gentle slopes, the canopy primarily comprises of lofty Norway spruce encompassed by majestic oak, poplar, hornbeam, ash and birch. Norway spruce at one time provided the traditional British Christmas tree to the masses for many years. Its timber is also widely used in construction and furniture. The hornbeam and ash could undoubtedly provide a modest fuel source for a new owner, making use of the current Forestry Commission thinning licence. In the shrub layer below you will find hazel coppice and hawthorn. The ground layer is bursting come summer with colourful woodland flora including bluebell, wood anemones, primrose, foxglove and wild garlic, providing a delightful woodland scene.

Near the south of the wood are a number of level spots close to a meandering stream that would make great camping areas. Perhaps a rope swing attached to a sturdy limb would be fun for all ages! The eastern boundary is indicated by the centre of a seasonal stream.

A number of feathered guests such as green woodpecker, owl, buzzard, greenfinch and numerous harmonised songsters relish the tranquillity found here. Muntjac, roe and fallow deer, wood mouse, badger, fox and hare make up a small part of the mammal population.

If It Were Mine

There are some good quality spruce logs on the ground that I would certainly consider using for a project; I would mill these into planks. Foraging some of the garlic to make pesto would be enjoyable, and indeed delicious! Family camping under the stars, absorbing the peaceful surroundings whilst looking out for nocturnal visitors is a must!
