Description

South Copse is part of a wider woodland known as South Wood. Access is taken off the main road, with a legal access granted to the copse along the main forest track to the edge of the woodland. Currently the woodland is only accessible on foot, however this could be upgraded (with the right permissions) to allow full vehicle access, especially important if any timber extraction is required.

Oak, ash and hazel trees are the main species found here, although there is also the occasional hornbeam, silver birch, holly and even field maple too. These other species are found sporadically throughout the woodland and around the edges.

Ancient Woodlands are traditionally designated as such using old maps and also by inspecting the plant ‘indicator’ species. Bluebells are one of the more well-known of these, and South Wood has them in abundance. In springtime, they carpet the woodland floor and this is a beautiful sight to see. Wood anemones, wild garlic, dog’s mercury and red campion are all indicator species too and are present here at various times of the year. Wild grasses and ferns as well as fragrant honeysuckle all contribute to this exceptionally rich tapestry of colour.

In this part of the world, deer are aplenty, so too are grey squirrels, songbirds, and almost certainly a wandering fox or two and badgers if you can spot them in the early mornings or late at night.

There is a public right of way for walkers (Downs Link) along the access track through the wider woodland, the old Steyning line which connected Horsham with the once bustling south-coast port of Shoreham-by-Sea. This does not affect the tranquillity of the land, so much so when we visited the woodland we noted how quiet and peaceful it was here (apart from the thick chatter of birds!).

There are views out eastwards over the agricultural fields that are quite lovely in the spring and summer months. The undulating woodland has a number of flatter areas that offer numerous opportunities for wild camping, woodland management, bird watching or other activities.

If It Were Mine

To enable vehicle access into the woodland, I would certainly look at improving and widening parts of the track up to the woodland edge and create a little staging area in the northwest corner. This would also serve as a nice place to dry some firewood.

Some of the hazel on the edges could be coppiced, creating temporary open spaces whilst it regenerates and also provide either some timber to use for some green woodworking projects - temporary firewood storage perhaps - or as firewood itself. The eastern edge would also serve as a lovely place to pitch a tent and enjoy some tranquil evenings in this beautiful woodland.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
