Description
Representing a lovely woodland environment, Fletching Wood forms part of a wider forested area situated 3 miles southwest of Royal Tunbridge Wells in rural East Sussex.
The mature woodland canopy is located on gentle south-westerly sloping loams and largely comprises majestic Scots pine to the southeast and birch to the northwest. In addition, lofty beech fringe the northwest boundary, adding further shades of green come spring. There is also a number of sizable oak standards throughout; these could provide a new custodian with some quality timber if required. Within the shrub layer you will find holly, rowan, sweet chestnut and hawthorn along with younger birch and pine. Colourful woodland flora and ground cover includes foxglove, fragrant honeysuckle, primrose and lush bracken, all savoured by our essential pollinators.
There is a number of areas that would make nice spots for bushcraft activities by day and camping in hammocks by night. Space amongst the trees could also allow for a stem to be selected for on-site milling.
The feathered population includes sparrowhawk, owl, redpoll, sedge warbler and a multitude of harmonious songsters. Regular woodland mammals include deer (both fallow and roe) wood mouse, hare, badger and fox. Broadwater Warren Nature Reserve is 200 metres south as the crow flies, further enhancing the attraction to wildlife in the vicinity.
If It Were Mine
I would certainly consider mounting a trail camera or two on trees to capture the activities of the local wildlife. Some logs for the home hearth would be on the jobs list. Camping with friends and family applying the principles of ‘leave no trace’ would be planned for the warmer months .
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
