Part of a wider woodland area and accessed through a secure gate and along a track, Appleford Wood is located three and a half miles from the market town of New Alresford in rural Hampshire.

Situated amongst level loamy chalky soils, the mature canopy consists of majestic beech, oak, ash, cherry, birch, sycamore and field maple. Some of the beech and oak are of superb quality, giving a new custodian the opportunity to yield some timber for home craft projects, making use of the Forestry Commission thinning licence in place. Within the shrub layer below you will find verdant hazel coppice, holly, occasional crab apple and hawthorn; the hazel coppice would make a very handy bushcraft material. During warmer months, the ground layer is festooned with colourful ground flora that includes bluebell, wood anemone, primrose and dog’s mercury.

Far reaching farmland views are enjoyed from the northern and eastern boundaries, anywhere here would make a wonderful camping spot. There are a number of open spaces between the stems that would make good locations for bushcraft.  Historic shallow chalk pits towards the northwest boundary add a further dimension to the woodland topography.

Woodland mammals comprise muntjac, roe and fallow deer, hare, wood mouse, badger and fox. Treecreeper, owl, woodpecker, greenfinch and an array of acoustic songsters make up the flying populace in this tranquil area.

If It Were Mine

A bell tent near the northeast corner would be perfect for occasional camping, perhaps with a carefully managed campfire close by.  A hammock or two between some trees would be the perfect way to immerse oneself in the natural surroundings of this wonderful spot. I would also enjoy gathering fuel for the home hearth.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
