Description

Fleur Wood is situated 5.5 miles southeast of the village of Robertsbridge in rural East Sussex and is part of a wider woodland, accessed through a locked gate and along a track.

Located on gentle slopes among loamy clays, the canopy primarily comprises of majestic oak standards, hornbeam, ash, birch, occasional Norway spruce and poplar; poplar is a fast-growing broadleaf species with its timber containing a high moisture content and is often used for flooring around fireplaces. The hornbeam could certainly provide a fuel source, making use of the current Forestry Commission thinning licence. In the shrub layer below you will discover hazel coppice and hawthorn. The ground layer is brimming come summer with colourful woodland flora including bluebell, wood anemones, primrose, foxglove and wild garlic, proving a lovely woodland scene.

Towards the south of the wood are a number of good spots close to a winding stream that would make wonderful camping areas. Perhaps a rope swing could also be hung here. A small seasonal pond occupies the most northerly point of the wood.

Muntjac, roe and fallow deer, wood mouse, badger, fox and hare make up a small part of the mammal population. A number of feathered visitors such as green woodpecker, owl, buzzard, greenfinch and numerous congenial songbirds relish in the serenity found here.

If It Were Mine

A modest amount of pesto could be considered, making use of the aromatic wild garlic here. Bushcraft would feature with plenty of material to hand. I would also hang a hammock between two stems and quietly observe woodland life.
