Description

Part of a larger gated woodland, Goldspur Copse lies 5.5 miles southeast of the charming village of Robertsbridge in rural East Sussex. Access is along an unsurfaced track.

Situated on gentle slopes amongst loamy clay soils, the canopy mainly consists of majestic oak, hornbeam, sweet chestnut, birch and poplar; poplar is an interesting timber with a high moisture content, often used for flooring around fireplaces and brake blocks for vehicles. In addition, some of the hornbeam could serve as a good fuel source, making use of the current Forestry Commission thinning licence. In the shrub layer below you will find hazel coppice, hawthorn and holly. The ground layer is awash with colourful woodland flora during warmer months - swathes of bluebell, wood anemones, primrose, foxglove and wild garlic create a lovely woodland scene.

Towards the south of the wood are a number of level areas close to a meandering stream that would make great camping spots. Part of the eastern boundary is also flanked by a seasonal stream.

A number of feathered guests such as green woodpecker, owl, buzzard, greenfinch and countless harmonious songbirds delight in the serenity discovered here. Muntjac, roe and fallow deer, wood mouse, badger, fox and hare make up the mammal population.

If It Were Mine

I would think about clearing an area to perhaps camp overnight with a small fire. The tranquil surroundings are an ideal spot to get away from it all. Some bird boxes in trees would be a nice idea. There is plenty of hornbeam to stock my log store at home for the winter.
