Description

Three and a half miles from the attractive market town of New Alresford, Nutley Wood forms part of a wider Ancient Woodland area in peaceful rural Hampshire.

Located mostly on level chalky lime soils with gentle undulations, its mature canopy contains majestic beech, ash, sycamore, birch and oak standards; a number of the oak are of very good form. Within the shrub layer below there is lush hazel coppice, holly and hawthorn. In addition, there is a good amount of naturally regenerating ash, sycamore and beech. The latter in particular grows well in early years under a shaded canopy. A new custodian could certainly consider milling an oak stem or two on site using the Forestry Commission thinning licence in place. Come spring and summer the ground layer is awash with Ancient Woodland floral indicators including bluebells, wood anemones along with primrose and foxglove.

Farmland views are enjoyed from the eastern boundary, making a lovely spot for occasional camping. A number of hollows throughout the woodland could serve as bushcraft areas or even for den making with the family.

Treecreeper, owl, woodpecker, greenfinch and many harmonised songsters delight in the serenity discovered here. Woodland mammals include muntjac, roe and fallow deer, wood mouse, badger and fox.

Nutley Wood is accessed along an unsurfaced track and presents huge scope for a weekend woodsman.

If It Were Mine

Felling one of the oak or beech would be a good prospect; fuel logs and timber for woodcraft would be on the list of uses. Overnights with the family in a tent would feature around a campfire. Perhaps a rope swing could be hung from a strong tree limb.
