Description

Part of a wider gated forested area, Swoop Wood lies 5.5 miles southeast of the attractive village of Robertsbridge in rural East Sussex.

Located among gently sloping loamy clay soils, the canopy principally consists of Norway spruce and occasional Scots pine to the west with a mixture of broadleaves to the east including majestic oak, hornbeam, birch, poplar and beech. Some of the hornbeam could serve as a good fuel source, making use of the Forestry Commission thinning licence in place. In the shrub beneath is occasional hazel coppice, hawthorn and regeneration of beech. The ground layer is covered with colourful woodland flora during warmer months - patches of bluebell, wood anemones, primrose, foxglove and wild garlic.

Towards the south of the wood is a wonderful opening in the canopy that would make a perfect spot to camp overnight with friends and family, looking up at the cosmos. This area would also make a good place to mill some timber on-site.

Woodland mammals consist of muntjac, roe and fallow deer, wood mouse, badger, fox and hare. A number of feathered guests such as green woodpecker, owl, buzzard, greenfinch and countless harmonious songbirds delight in the serenity discovered here.

Swoop Wood is accessed along a stone track and gives great scope for a weekend woodsman to enjoy time away with the family.

If It Were Mine

A rope swing for the young and young at heart would be high on the list of priorities. Perhaps a circle of rocks could be placed in the canopy opening for a small and safe campfire. Hammocks would be hung for overnights along with a gathering of logs for the home hearth.
