Ropley Wood is located in peaceful rural Hampshire, three and a half miles from the attractive market town of New Alresford and forms part of a wider Ancient Woodland area.

Situated mainly on level chalky lime soil with gentle undulations, the mature canopy comprises majestic oak (numerous stems are of an excellent quality), ash, beech, sycamore and birch. In the shrub beneath, you will find lush hazel coppice, holly and hawthorn. In addition, there is a good quantity of naturally regenerating ash, sycamore and beech. The latter in particular establishes well in early years under a shaded canopy, as does sycamore. With a Forestry Commission thinning licence already in place, a new owner could yield a beech or two for logs and craft projects. The ground layer during spring and summer is coloured with woodland flora including bluebells, primrose, foxglove and wood anemone.

Farmland views are enjoyed from its eastern boundary, making a pleasant spot for occasional camping. A pond near the northwestern corner provides a rich habitat for insect life, and a fine setting for bushcraft. There are also a few gentle hollows perfect for the children to make dens.

Woodland mammals include muntjac, roe and fallow deer, wood mouse, badger and fox. A range of feathered visitors such as treecreeper, owl, woodpecker, greenfinch and many singing songsters delight in the tranquillity found here.

Ropley Wood is accessed along an unsurfaced track and offers considerable scope for a weekend woodsman.

If It Were Mine

I would firstly clear some areas for carrying out woodcraft projects and overnight stays, setting up some hammocks and a small campfire. I would consider selecting an oak or beech stem to mill on site. Some fuel for the hearth at home is a must.
