Description

Situated 6 miles northwest of Guildford, Mission Wood is located within a wider forested area known as Leapingbar Copse.

Formed amongst level loam over clay soils, the mature canopy largely comprises majestic Scots pine, with further species towards the northern, eastern and western boundaries including beech, oak, birch, cherry and larch. In addition, there are a number of magnificent beech veterans occupying both the southeast corner and the north; these areas would make perfect spots for bushcraft.

In the shrub layer below is a patchwork of colourful rhododendron, which looks particularly lovely during spring and summer. Most of the woodland is covered by a Forestry Commission thinning licence giving a new owner scope to yield one or two of the Scots pine, perhaps for a craft project at home.

Woodland flora comprise bluebell, foxglove, primrose and fern all relished by our essential pollinators in the warmer months. Any number of the open spaces would make great spots to camp under the stars.

A variety of woodland creatures including deer - both muntjac and roe - fox, badger, hare and wood mouse have all been spotted. Numerous feathered visitors enjoying the tranquillity include little owl, green woodpecker, pipit, yellowhammer and countless harmonious songbirds.

Mission Wood is a wonderful place for a weekend woodsman to get away from it all with family and friends and benefits from good access navigable with a 2WD car all year round.

There is an Article 4 direction on the wider woodland including Mission Wood which means that permitted development rights which normally apply for any improvement to, or installation of, gates/fences/walls have been removed and full planning permission should be sought.

If It Were Mine

I would firstly consider a couple of the pine to drop and mill on-site. Some firewood for the hearth at home would also be a priority. A nice long rope swing hung from one of the larger trees would be fun for the kids. I would clear a few areas to work on my bushcraft skills, and camp overnight from time to time.
