Description

Situated in rural East Sussex, Saints Wood is located at the end of a hard track and is part of a wider forested area known as Cow Field, lying 2 miles west of Crowborough and offers a real sense of tranquillity rarely found these days.

Sitting amid loamy clay soils, this mature woodland is attractively separated by a deep meandering stream with the western side enjoying far reaching rural views. This part of the copse comprises magnificent beech, oak and yew; the latter is known for its strong timber quality and historical importance - some live beyond 1000 years! Poplar, ash, sweet chestnut, Scots pine and occasional Lawson cypress also feature here. To the east of the wood is a canopy predominantly consisting of majestic Norway spruce, poplar and oak (some of which could be selected for fuel, using the existing Forestry Commission thinning licence) with a number of magnificent beech along parts of the steep banks of the stream.

Below, the lush shrub throughout is a lovely mixture of birch, colourful rhododendron, holly, young ash and sycamore, especially in the northeast. Embellishing the ground layer are patches of bluebell, foxglove, wood anemone and ferns, a delight during spring.

The eastern side is accessed along a path that leads down a few small steps where the gentle steam is crossed via a timber footbridge, giving a wonderful sense of adventure as one ascends to the other side of the woodland. Here you will also find a tributary to the stream. A few secluded level coves along the banks of the stream offer great spots for camping.

Woodland creatures such as roe deer, badger, fox and common pipistrelle bats have all been spotted taking shelter in this peaceful setting. A diversity of feathered visitors such as kestrel, yellowhammer, woodpecker and many musical songbirds enjoy the equanimity of this location.

Saints Wood benefits from good vehicular access navigable with a two-wheel drive vehicle.


If It Were Mine

A rope swing over the stream from one of the large beech trees is a must! Secluded overnighting locations are plentiful along the banks; I would certainly clear a couple of spots to facilitate this, perhaps with a BBQ area. A little fuel will be gathered too for the home hearth.

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.

Directions & Access

  • From the centre of Crowborough, continue south along the A26, passing the fire station and Morrisons petrol station on the left.
  • After 0.5 miles turn right onto Warren Road and continue along through the residential estate through crossroads at Rannoch Road and Fielden Road (point U on the plan below).
  • Stay on Warren Road, which will eventually change to a good hard stone track.
  • After 0.7 miles the road forks at a small wooden hut with a sign attached saying ‘Home Farm’ (point V), take the fork left where the tarmac ends. Please take care driving along the track from here.
  • Continue down the track passing the post box and house development on the right, passing through a wooden gate shortly after.
  • After 660 metres you will arrive at the bottom of the track with a wooden gate to the right, just as the bridleway bears left (point W).
  • The gate is often closed but not locked, please open the gate and continue through the wider forest, following the occasional red arrows on trees and passing the lake on the left.
  • After 1430 metres you will arrive at a forked junction in the track, take the left and continue down the hard track passing a wooden gate and some post and rail fencing set back with a Red Rock Forestry management sign attached on the right.
  • After 210 metres turn right (point X) and continue down the recently resurfaced track and bear right shortly after (if you come to the stone bridge you’ve gone too far).
  • After 135 metres you will arrive at a wooden gate (point A). Please park in a suitable place neither obstructing the gate nor any of the tracks.
  • Climb the gate (sorry we do not provide keys for viewings) and continue along the track.
  • After 620 metres you will arrive at the woodland (point B), indicated by red paint on two wooden posts either side of the track.

Boundaries

  • The north boundary HBC is indicated by red paint on occasional wooden posts, trees and fence posts.
  • The east boundary CD is the fence with the paddock beyond, DE is the earth bund with ditch and paddock beyond, EF is indicated by green paint on occasional wooden posts, old iron fence posts and trees.
  • The south boundary FG is indicated by yellow paint on occasional wooden posts.
  • The west boundary GH is the fence with fields beyond.
