Description
Hartley Copse is a charming broadleaf copse and forms part of a wider woodland, located just southeast of the small village of Staplecross in rural East Sussex.
This quiet mixed aged woodland is situated on loamy clay soils that slope gently towards its southeast boundary, flanked by a seasonal stream. A vigorously growing area towards the north offers oak, hornbeam, field maple, ash and birch. Towards the southern part of the wood (also designated as Ancient Woodland), there is a mature canopy of hornbeam, sweet chestnut, ash and a number of oak standards. A shrub layer of hazel coppice and occasional holly can be found below. A majestic yew tree dominates the southeast corner, a species known for its strong timber quality and historical importance, some yew are known to live beyond 1000 years. Swathes of bluebell carpet the ground layer during spring as well as primrose, foxglove, blackberry and bracken.
Wildlife populations are enticed by the serenity of the wood; deer (muntjac and roe), badger, woodpecker, buzzard, long-tailed tit, sparrow hawk and numerous songsters are abundant.
The southern part of the copse benefits from a Forestry Commission thinning licence, giving a new owner scope for ongoing woodland management. There are also two convenient soft tracks providing access to the northeast and southeast of the wood, useful for firewood extraction.
Hartley Copse is one of few locations in the south of England out of earshot of the drone of traffic and has complete tranquillity and peace. The wood has good access via a hard surfaced track suitable for a 2WD car.
If It Were Mine
I would consider establishing a simple management plan both for the younger and more mature parts of the woodland. A nice strimmed area towards the northern end for a camping spot would also be high on the agenda.
