Description

Fernie Wood is located a short distance southeast of Maidstone and is part of a wider Ancient Woodland known as Warren Wood.

Situated on loamy clay soils that slope very gently south, the mature canopy comprises majestic ash and oak standards with occasional sweet chestnut and hornbeam.  A lush shrub layer beneath consists of hazel coppice, maturing oak, birch, sycamore and field maple. There is a good amount of promising ash regeneration in areas; a new owner could begin a management program to further enhance this using the existing Forestry Commission thinning licence. Swathes of bluebells during spring makes the woodland a truly charming place to be. Other colourful flora to be found include red campion, willowherb, wood anemone, blackberry and bracken.

Communities of mammals such as badger, fallow deer, fox and the common dormouse add to the diversity of the woodland. Feathered visitors are abundant; an array of musical songsters as well as buzzards, willow tits, owls and lesser spotted woodpeckers can be heard.

Formerly part of the Leeds Castle Estate, Fernie Wood is a perfect location for weekend camping and recreation, with a possibility of yielding some good quality fire wood. The wood benefits from good access via a hard-surfaced track navigable with a 2WD car.           


If It Were Mine

A supply of fire wood is a must for my wood burner at home; I would carefully select some of the ash for this. I would also clear a discreet location to set up an area for a fire a hammock between two trees and quietly observe the woodland wildlife overnight.

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.


Directions & Access

  • From junction 8 of the M20, head southeast on the A20 towards Lenham and Leeds Castle.
  • Passing the Mercure Hotel on the right, take the second exit off the roundabout and continue on the A20 towards Lenham and Herrietsham.
  • Shortly after, take the first exit off the roundabout and continue along the A20.
  • After half a mile, turn left just after the Park Gate Inn pub on the right, onto Hospital Road.
  • Continue along the lane passing under the motorway and bear left, crossing a railway bridge after 90 metres.
  • Bear right and continue along Hospital Road for 200 metres and you will see our Woods4sale sign and after 30 metres on the right, a black security bar gate (point A on the plan below).
  • Please park in a suitable safe place off the road not obstructing through traffic. Sorry we do not provide keys for viewings.
  • Climb under the security bar and continue along the stone track for 290 metres and you will arrive at a short green and blue painted wooden post (point B), where the woodland begins on the right.

Boundaries

  • The northeast boundary is indicated by green paint on wooden posts and trees.
  • The southeast boundary is indicated by red paint on wooden posts and trees.
  • The northwest boundary is indicated by blue paint on wooden posts and trees.
  • The south boundary is the low earth bund with fields beyond.
