Description

Bluebell Creek lies a short distance southeast of Maidstone and forms part of a wider Ancient Woodland known as Warren Wood, formally part of the Leeds Castle Estate.

Situated on gentle sloping loamy clay soils, the north of the wood comprises vigorous and maturing ash, oak, birch and sweet chestnut with majestic oak and sweet chestnut standard above.  A lush shrub layer beneath consists of hawthorn, hazel coppice and field maple. Towards the southern end, a well-established plantation of sweet chestnut is showing good form. With the benefit of a Forestry Commission thinning licence in place, a new owner could begin a management program to further enhance this flourishing wood, with the potential of a good fuel supply. During spring, the ground layer becomes an absolute delight, with carpets of bluebell (an Ancient Woodland indicator), wood anemone, red campion, blackberry and bracken.

The east boundary is flanked by a meandering seasonal stream, bridged towards the south by an attractive fallen mature sweet chestnut, perhaps a useful crossing for wildlife! Mammals such as fallow deer, badger, common dormouse and fox add to the diverse woodland community. Feathered visitors include willow tit, lesser spotted woodpecker, buzzard and an array of vocal songsters.

This manageable woodland is a perfect opportunity for a keen woodsperson to yield some quality timber as well as enjoying a weekend or two camping. Bluebell Creek is accessed via a good hard surfaced track navigable with a 2WD car.

If It Were Mine

I would firstly remove the tree shelters, then, after a period of getting to know the woodland, I would consider a very gentle thinning programme making careful selections to greater enhance the quality and variety of the trees to be retained. A grassy location toward the southern boundary would make a good spot for overnighting once strimmed.
