Description

Part of a wider forested area, Silver Wood stands in a peaceful location on the edge of Wolverton village in rural Hampshire.

The woodland sits on a flat site with predominately loamy fertile soils that have established a strong compartment of tall birch with an attractive understory of maturing western hemlock, noticeable upon arrival at the western boundary. This area is easily accessed on foot by an open ride running northwest into the copse that could be an ideal camping location if strimmed.

To the east, an Ancient Woodland restoration programme was undertaken on a former conifer plantation and was subsequently replanted approximately 9 years ago with some now promising native oak. Natural succession of birch, Scots pine, western hemlock and the occasional holly are also showing strong establishment, adding good biodiversity to the wood. In addition, several fine beech trees run the length of the eastern boundary. This part of the woodland also comprises a public footpath running through it from the south boundary to the north.

A variety of wild fauna and flora are known to the area including deer (roe and fallow), hedgehog, woodpecker, buzzard, heather and blackberry.       

Silver Wood offers a fantastic opportunity for an aspirational silviculturist to begin a methodical management programme to favour the establishing oak as a primary objective. It benefits from excellent access via a hard track navigable with a 2WD vehicle.


If It Were Mine

I would be very keen to get stuck in and begin a management plan for this woodland. I would initially carry out some silvicultural duties clearing the competing birch in and around the establishing oak trees. I’d also be inclined to yield some of the more mature birch for some domestic fuel. A clearing amongst the western hemlock and tall birch would make a discreet camping spot too.

Residential Planning Permission

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.


Directions & Access

  • From Newbury, head south east on the A339.
  • After you leave the residential area of Newbury drive for about 7½ miles.
  • Turn left onto the minor road called Crabs Hill, signed for Wolverton Common and Axmansford.
  • If you miss this turn, don’t take the next one which is signed for Wolverton. Turn around and go back to Crabs Hill.
  • After 0.3 miles turn left into Church Lane (opposite the church).
  • Drive down this lane until the tarmac runs out and then continue another ¼ mile until you come into the woodland.
  • Keep right when the road splits and park next to the locked gate (point A on the plan below).
  • Climb the gate, (sorry we do not supply keys for viewings) and continue down the forest track for about 470 metres until you get to a ‘T’ junction in the forest road (point B).
  • Turn right and continue for approx. 380 metres until you come to a left turn in the track (point C).
  • Turn left and continue up this track for 250 metres until you arrive at a Woods4Sale sign on a tree (point D). Silver Wood is now in front of you to the right.

Boundaries

  • The north boundary on the east side of the public footpath is indicated by a tall wire fence and fence posts with red painted tops. The north boundary on the west side of the public footpath is indicated by wooden posts and trees painted red.
  • The east boundary is the wire fence.
  • The west boundary is indicated by trees painted green.
  • The south boundary is indicated by short wooden posts and trees painted blue.

Sporting Rights

The sporting rights are reserved to another party. But we believe they are rarely, if ever exercised.  


Mineral Rights

The mineral rights are included except where reserved by statute.


Rights Of Way

  • There is a right of way for all times and all purposes marked ABCDE on the plan.
  • A shared maintenance clause covers all of the rights of way with liability according to use.
  • There is a public footpath on the eastern side of the wood between FG.
