Description
Machar Wood occupies level ground at the northwest corner of a larger conifer woodland. It is about two road miles west of the small village of Newmachar which has local services including shops and a primary school. Aberdeen is about 15 miles to the south and reached in under half an hour by car.
The wood is dominated by a quality crop of Sitka spruce dating from the 1990s. The maturing stems have clearly benefited from the fertile conditions and show good clean form and vigorous growth. The spruce is now approaching production phase. Thinning would yield a healthy volume of lumber while also optimising conditions for the retained stems to grow on to maturity. A broad ride up the west side and a narrower one within the wood give good access to all areas.
The north side of the spruce is fringed with a variety of younger planted broadleaves including oak, cherry, willow and rowan. Beyond this is an area of open grassland framed by mature beech stems just outside the north boundary. This makes for an attractive and private amenity area which could also be developed for horticulture or further woodland planting.
Access from the minor public road to the west is via a short length of hard track which connects with the unsurfaced ride running up the west side of the wood. The public roads serving Machar Wood are not restricted with respect to timber haulage and the northeast is well provided with a variety of timber markets and processors.
Machar presents as a productive woodland with amenity credentials and thus will appeal equally to the recreational owner and those keen on woodland management.
If It Were Mine
My first job would be to release the broadleaves from their tree tubes. More adventurously I’d then turn to the spruce which is ready for a first thin. This could be done in conjunction with consenting woodland neighbours and would realise some quality mill wood as well as optimising growing conditions for the retained stems.
There is definite scope to enhance the open area to the north with a firepit for quiet recreation. And perhaps plant a few more fruiting trees and shrubs for the birds.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
