Description

Craig Burn Wood forms the upper part of a larger woodland overlooking Leader Water and the attractive Borders village of Earlston with its range of local shops and services. The proximity of the A68 means that Edinburgh is under an hour’s drive to the north and Newcastle just over 1½ hours to the south.

Craig Burn occupies level and gently sloping ground with an easterly aspect and is bounded to north and south by watercourses. This attractive and oft overlooked part of the Scottish Borders is a quiet backwater dominated by rolling hills, farms, woods and moorland, and the area is steeped in history dating back to the Iron Age.

The wood supports a variety of species. To the north there is a stand of Sitka spruce and to the south a small belt of mixed conifers dominated by Scots pine. In between is a variety of broadleaves including oak and sycamore plus occasional birch, beech, ash, wych elm and alder. The ravine leading down to the south boundary stream is populated with a mix of broadleaves and a scattering of woody shrubs.

The tighter density of the conifers has resulted in clean stems which should enable small volumes of mill wood in time. In contrast, the broadleaves are generally well spread out with fuller canopies and small glades between, lending a bright and airy feel to the wood. The woodland floor is composed of soft grasses, woodland flowers, ferns, patches of bracken and occasional woody shrubs. It is largely free of entangling vegetation making for easy pedestrian access.

Access to the wood is via a well-established shared farm track. This in turn links to a woodland track enabling easy access with 4WD vehicles, and 2WD access with care.

This attractive woodland ticks a lot of boxes. Conservation, silviculture and quiet enjoyment are all in prospect here.

If It Were Mine

I would consider thinning the spruce thereby releasing the best stems and producing plenty of wood for campfire and hearth (or possibly a small amount of lumber), and I would like to underplant the less dense broadleaf area with some fruiting shrubs to benefit the birds. A few birdboxes wouldn’t go amiss either.

Strimming a small area for quiet recreation and camping would complete the picture.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
