Logie Wood lies on the south side of a private loch in an undisturbed location amidst gently undulating countryside in northeast Aberdeenshire. The fishing harbours of Fraserburgh and Peterhead are both about 10 miles distant and there are a number of attractive coastal villages and beaches close by. Aberdeen is a 45-minute drive to the south. 

The outstanding feature of this woodland is the three-acre loch that it fronts, part of which is within the boundary of Logie Wood. This beautiful body of water attracts a variety of birds, from geese and ducks to swallows and songsters. There is a generous area of maintained grass by the waterside which provides a variety of attractive locations for camping and quiet recreation.

To the east of the loch there is a stand of maturing lodgepole pine which was planted in the late 1990s, while to the south there is a more open area with scattered mature conifers (mostly spruce).

The wood is served by a hard track navigable by 2WD vehicles. The adjacent public road is an approved timber haulage route giving good linkage to timber markets.

With loch frontage, open water, unstocked areas and maturing pine, Logie offers a wide variety of habitats and an equally wide variety of opportunities.

Safety Note. Please take extra care when viewing Logie, especially with regard to open water and any windblown trees.

If It Were Mine

Logie has real amenity and conservation credentials with the added potential of some angling. The accessible loch-side area is hard to beat as a place for quiet recreation and camping.

In the short term I would look at restocking some of the open areas south of the loch with native broadleaves. In the longer term I would want to progressively harvest the pine and then diversify the subsequent rotation with a range of trees and shrubs.

Residential Planning Permission

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.

Directions & Access

  • The village of Mintlaw lies west 9 miles west of Peterhead and a similar distance south of Fraserburgh in northeast Aberdeenshire.
  • Head north out of Mintlaw on the A952.
  • After 2½ miles fork right onto a minor road signed for Crimond, St Fergus and St Combs (just after Wallace Caravans).
  • After 200 metres take the first turn left signed for Crimond and St Combs.
  • After 2.1 miles turn left where signed St Combs 6.
  • Continue for 0.6 mile then turn left onto a farm track at point X (marked on the 2nd plan below), just after a white cottage on the right with stone barns adjacent to the road. A powerline crosses the road at the junction.
  • Continue west on the farm track for 0.6 mile to arrive at Lochview Wood on your left (A on the plan).
  • Please park clear of the locked entrance gate (B). There is pedestrian access to the left of the gate.
  • Walk straight down the forest track ahead of you leaving the loch to your right, and enter Logie Wood after 240 metres at the outflow marked with white-topped posts.


  • The north boundary CD is a deep ditch with white-topped posts at C, and also at the west end by red-topped posts at E.
  • Other boundaries are stock fences (mostly on field edges).

Sporting Rights

The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale. They are not let.

Rights Of Way

  • There is a right of access for all purposes at all times over the route XABC.
  • A maintenance clause covers all the shared rights of way with liability according to use.

Fencing Liabilities

As is usual in Scotland boundary fences are maintained at mutual expense.

Third Party Rights
