Description

Archers Wood occupies gently sloping and near-level ground towards the east side of a larger broadleaf woodland known as Hyons Wood, some 2 miles south-west of Prudhoe. Hexham is about 10 miles to the northwest and Newcastle a similar distance to the east. Both are easily reached in half an hour via the A69.

You would be hard put to believe this woodland haven was previously mined. Trees, wildlife and tranquillity have replaced the clamour of Victorian industry.

Set amidst over 200 acres of woodland, Archers supports an array of native tree species. Birch dominates but there is also a healthy amount of open-canopy oak plus some notable beech stems on the north fringes. There is also a scattering of ash, rowan and wych elm along with a few willow in damper margins towards the north side. The current owners have also carried out a little enrichment planting in some of the grassy glades.

The light understorey includes hawthorn, hazel, and occasional young regenerating stems including beech. The wide spacing of most of the trees admits plenty of dappled light to a woodland floor of grasses and ferns. A few holly bushes and honeysuckle completes the picture.

Archers Wood is served by a well-found hard track (suitable for 2WD access) which links to a private parking spur on its western side for ‘in-wood’ parking. The smooth terrain and largely clean woodland floor makes for easy pedestrian access across most of the wood, enhanced by well-maintained grassy rides on the boundaries – ideal for both recreation and management.

Attractive and secluded, this delightful wood combines some ‘big wood’ features with a competitive price tag.

If It Were Mine

There’s plenty of deadwood for the campfire and cutting a few standing stems would feed my wood-burner at home. I’d like to see a few more native species so would plant some fruiting shrubs and trees in a few open spaces.

A small seasonal stream running through the wood may tempt me to dig a small pond.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
