Description
Twopence Wood lies near the centre of a larger gated broadleaf woodland amidst the Northumberland countryside. The traditional market town of Morpeth with its wide range of facilities is three miles to the northeast. The A1 is ten minutes away giving easy access from north and south.
The woodland - and access to it - overlies part of the former Tranwell Airfield. Known as RAF Morpeth in WW2, it housed the No. 4 Air Gunnery School, with trainees flying to nearby Druridge Bay to practice live fire. Nature has convincingly reclaimed the area in the intervening years and apart from the taxiway which gives excellent access to the wood, little is now evident of its former use.
Twopence Wood is dominated by elegant silver birch stems punctuated with a few oak trees. There are also a few shrubs including hawthorn and holly. The woodland floor is a mix of soft grasses, fern, bracken and mosses along with patches of blackberry and the occasional honeysuckle. In the autumn there is an abundant display of seasonal fungi.
The wood is served by a newly constructed substantial stone track capable of supporting timber extraction, but also readily accessible to 2WD vehicles. This leads to two lay-bys for in-wood parking on the west and southeast sides of the property.
On our visit kestrels, buzzards, and tawny owls were all present along with a variety of woodland songsters and a flock of long-tailed tits. Roe deer, foxes and badgers all take refuge in Twopence and the adjacent woodland.
Twopence Wood benefits from excellent access, easy terrain and privacy. Enjoy it all at your leisure!
If It Were Mine
I’d tube and halo-thin around any emerging oak saplings I find to give them light and space to grow. I’d also thin the birch in about 5 years’ time to provide a healthy supply of logs.
A few bird and bat boxes would be put up and some feeders if I lived near enough to keep them topped up.
BBQs on a summer’s eve would be a regular feature.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
