Description
North Leadgate lies on gently sloping north-facing ground with extensive views over adjacent farmland to north, east and west. The attractive village of Hedley-on-the-Hill with its excellent pub is about a mile to the west. Newcastle and the A1 are about ten miles to the east.
The previous crop of larch was felled in 2008 and the site was restocked in the following spring with a variety of native hardwoods. Species planted include birch, oak, ash, rowan, wych elm, aspen, willow and alder, along with some hazel, blackthorn and hawthorn. The wood established well and is now entering pole-stage with canopies lifting above clean stems. A small stand of more mature spruce and larch helps to screen the power line that cuts across the northern tip of the wood.
Access is via a hard 4x4 track through adjacent woodland. This has become somewhat overgrown in recent years and would also benefit from some additional stone. The track along the south edge of the wood is similarly in need of maintenance to restore full vehicular access.
The secluded location and emerging trees mean that the wood now harbours an array of wildlife including badgers, foxes and roe deer. Woodland songsters are also taking up residence (under the watchful eye of kestrels and buzzards).
North Leadgate is rapidly maturing into an attractive native woodland in a very scenic area.
If It Were Mine
There’s plenty to keep me occupied here! My first job would be to reinstate the access by the addition of some stone and also by clearing ingrowing vegetation. The young birches are growing well and are consequently becoming quite ‘drawn’. They would benefit from thinning to enable crown development. There are still a some protective guards from when the trees were planted which could be removed.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
