Description
South Leadgate lies on level and gently sloping ground with a northerly aspect and commanding views over the rolling farmland of Northumberland. The attractive village of Hedley-on-the-Hill is about a mile to the west. Newcastle and the A1 are about ten miles to the east.
The previous crop of pine was felled in 2008 and the site was restocked in the following spring with a variety of native hardwoods. Species planted include birch, oak, ash, rowan, wych elm, aspen, willow and alder. Woody shrubs like hazel and hawthorn were also dotted across the site. The wood has established well and is now entering pole-stage with canopies lifting above clean stems.
Access is taken directly off the adjacent public road via a stoned track driveable at the start by 2WD. Further in the track has become somewhat overgrown and would benefit from some clearance along with additional stone further down the hill.
The local wildlife is already appreciating the shelter afforded by the emerging trees. Badgers and roe deer both track through the wood, and woodland birds are also increasingly apparent with attendant buzzards often seen overhead.
Maturing woodlands allow an owner to leave their mark by shaping future development. This sizeable example promises plenty of interest as it returns the landscape to native forest.
If It Were Mine
After upgrading the track access I’d want to extend this into the wood by means of a meandering path, perhaps leading to a secluded deck near the middle for quiet enjoyment. The maturing stems are now ready for respacing which would facilitate improved crown development. And there are still a few small protective tree guards which should be removed.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
