Scott's Wood lies near the upper edge of a larger conifer woodland set amidst the sweeping landscape of the Northumberland Moors, a short distance outside the National Park boundary. The attractive villages of Ridsdale and West Woodburn are minutes away, while a twenty-minute drive south gets you to Corbridge. Newcastle is a forty-minute drive to the southeast.

Scott’s Wood lies in a shallow dell just below the upper edges of the wider wood and thus combines a degree of shelter with some lovely moorland views. The majority of Scott’s Wood is composed of well-spaced Norway spruce giving the wood a delightful open feeling. These stems and adjacent stands were originally planted for the Christmas tree market about 25 years ago, but many trees were unharvested resulting in the current maturing stems.

The wood is served by a newly constructed substantial stone track capable of supporting timber extraction, but also readily accessible to 2WD vehicles. A generous parking spur on the west edge of the sale area enables in-wood parking.

This little property presents an affordable means of acquiring a private amenity woodland in a beautiful and dramatic moorland location.

SAFETY NOTE. The vicinity has been mined including parts of the adjacent woodland. While there are no reports of mines or entrances in Scott's Wood itself, the historic mining plans are not exhaustive. Please take extra care when viewing.

If It Were Mine

Scott’s Wood is all about affordable fun. The parking spur offers the prospect of overnighting with a camper. I might open and level out a small central area for camping and a firepit, using fallen stems (from Storm Arwen) to feed the campfire. I’d like to diversify the species by planting a variety of native broadleaves in more open areas. If visiting regularly, a bird feeder or two would also be nice.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.

Residential Planning Permission

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.

Directions & Access

  • Head north from Corbridge on the A68 for about 14 miles to the small village of Ridsdale.
  • At the far end of the village turn first right (east) onto the road signed for Kirkwhelpington and Knowesgate.
  • After 0.7 mile, park at (but clear of) the metal entrance gate to a conspicuous conifer wood on your right (A on the plan).
  • Climb the gate (sorry we do not provide keys for viewing) and walk straight up the track ahead of you for ½ mile until you emerge into an open area.
  • Continue a further 50 metres to enter Scott’s Wood at B (indicated by blue-topped posts to your left).


  • The west boundary (DE) is the west edge of the hard track indicated by blue-topped posts.
  • The northwest boundary (BE) is the southeast side of the hard track indicated by white-topped posts.
  • The east boundary (BC) is marked by a line of blue-topped posts.
  • The south boundary (CD) is marked by a line of red-topped posts.

Sporting Rights

The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale. They are not let.

Mineral Rights

The mineral rights are not included, but title to the mines and minerals is not registered.

Rights Of Way

  • There is a right of way at all times for all purposes over the route ABE.
  • A right of way is reserved to others over the route DE.
  • A shared maintenance clause covers all shared rights of way with liability according to use.
  • There are no public rights of way in the wood.
