Description

Carletonmoor Wood is a beautiful deciduous woodland just outside the Lake District National Park; indeed it is only a 15 minute drive east to Ennerdale and a bit further to Wasdale and Eskdale.  A short drive west takes you to St Bee’s Head on the coast and its RSPB nature reserve.

This woodland benefits from a small stream running through, the Ragga Brook, that eventually leads down to Kirk Beck within the Haile Great Wood SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) to the east. A small, informal footbridge spans the beck towards the eastern half of the woodland, but mostly the stream can be crossed easily enough without.

The woodland has a lovely mix of tree species, yet there does seem to be a predominance of mature oak, ash and beech. Dotted throughout are Scots pine, sycamore, cherry, hazel, hawthorn and holly and concentrated to the north of the beck is a patch of alder in this slightly wetter area of the woodland. There is also a significant amount of sycamore and hazel regeneration throughout.  At various times of the year you will find bluebells, fragrant honeysuckle, wood sorrell, ferns and bugle.

Access is taken directly off the main road on the southern edge, but is on foot only. There are also the remains of an old gateway on the eastern edge with a set of narrow stone hanging posts that could be reused and a gate reinstated. There are no internal tracks beyond a few foot and animal paths that randomly cross the woodland.

There was plenty of birdsong to accompany our visit to the woodland and the occasional bleat from neighbouring sheep. There was not much in the way of evidence of heavy deer activity but a few nibbled plants were found. There was the tell-tale smell of foxes and a black tipped hare was disturbed along the northern edge of the woodland so there is plenty of wildlife in the vicinity.

If It Were Mine

I would formalise the boundaries a little more by either fencing the gaps in the hedge, or better still, create a live hedge by laying the hazel and other trees growing along the boundary and only fence the areas where there are no trees to hand. I would also investigate installing a gate either at the historic location or create a new one. Thereafter I would fell some trees in the thickest part of the woodland to allow some natural tree regeneration and encourage wildflowers and other woodland plants to grow.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
