Modigars Copse lies on the bright southern side of larger wooded area known as Hyons Wood, two miles south-west of Prudhoe. Hexham is about 10 miles to the northwest and Newcastle a similar distance to the east. Both are easily reached in half an hour via the A69.

The wood occupies level and gently sloping ground near the base of a shallow valley above the Stanley Burn, a tributary of the Tyne. A small seasonal stream runs down its east boundary. Modigars is served by a well-found 2WD track which links to a private parking spur on the west side of the property.

The wood is composed of well-spaced mature open-canopy broadleaves. Oak, beech, ash and birch all feature along with minor elements of rowan, holly, hazel and the occasional spruce. The woodland floor is easily walked being a mix of soft grasses, ferns and woodland flowers in season.

Thanks to the larger surrounding woodland (over 200 acres) there’s plenty of resident wildlife within and adjacent to Modigars. We saw tree-creepers and nuthatches during our visit along with the usual woodland songsters, and heard tawny owls calling at dusk. Badgers, foxes and roe dear are also frequent visitors.

If you want an easily managed wood in which to enjoy the best of sylvan tranquillity then Modigars should be on your viewing list.

Safety Note: Due to historic mining activity in the wider woodland there may be unknown entrances and fissures which are not visible on the surface. There is no definitive plan of mining activity. Please take extra care when viewing.

If It Were Mine

Perhaps a little harvesting of firewood for the hearth. More adventurously I might consider a pond fed by the seasonal stream on the east boundary. But most of all it would be a green refuge to enjoy whenever time allowed.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
