Description

North Hackwood lies towards the south edge of the historic market town of Hexham in a pleasant residential area dominated by traditional houses. Hexham itself is near the A69 Carlisle to Newcastle road, giving easy access from east and west though it may well be that this property will appeal to a local resident.

The wood has a gentle north-facing aspect overlooking the town. The central part of the wood is riven by a gulley with a stream at the base.

Despite its modest size the wood boasts some impressive broadleaves with mature ash, lime, oak, sycamore and horse chestnut all in evidence. There is also a number of substantial yew trees. Beneath this is a light scattering of regenerating saplings and shrubs including holly, laurel, redwood and hazel. The woodland floor is largely clear of entangling vegetation.

There is easy access off the B6306 through a splayed entrance in the stone wall on the northeast side of the wood. A little clearance within would enable vehicular access and in-wood parking.

Descending through leafy glades to the stream below it is hard to believe you are still in the town as traffic sounds all but disappear. This little slice of ‘country-in-the-town’ is a most unusual and charming property and merits early viewing.

If It Were Mine

A morticed timber gate at the entrance would look good. I’d also look to remove some small patches of laurel before this invasive species got established, and a general silvicultural tidy up would also keep my log store topped up. Some bird-boxes would encourage the local avian residents. More adventurously, the horticulturally minded could develop an amazing woodland garden here.
