Description

Charm Wood lies towards the northwest edge of a larger woodland near the attractive village of Maeshafn, in the Clwydian Range ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Mold is about 15 minutes to the east and Ruthin a similar distance to the west. The A55 dual carriageway is just 8 miles to the northeast enabling easy access from Manchester and the West Midlands.

The wood has a gentle west-facing aspect with moderate slopes, gentle terraces and shallow gullies punctuated by limestone bluffs and outcrops. It appears to be a mid-rotation beech wood, but closer inspection reveals a goodly proportion of oak and ash which are also thriving on the lime-rich soils. The stand also supports a small number of elm and sycamore atop a light scattering of holly and hazel plus one rather lonely Scots pine.

When we visited, the woodland floor was a clear carpet of copper leaves punctuated by occasional fern and moss-clad limestone outcrops.

Access to the wood is via a private tarmac road that links with a well-found stone track on the west side of the property. From here there is good internal access to most parts of the wood thanks to freely-drained soils and gentle terrain.

Manageable, productive, attractive and affordable – this is certainly worth an early look.

If It Were Mine

The well-managed stands will benefit from ongoing thinning for which a Forestry Commission licence is in place until April 2017 (renewal should be a formality). Camping and BBQs would be inevitable (no licence required!).
