The Mount sits at the north end of a larger gated woodland in the Clwydian Range ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, overlooking the small village of Maeshafn. Mold is about 15 minutes to the east and Ruthin a similar distance to the west. The A55 dual carriageway is 8 miles to the northeast enabling ready access to and from Manchester and the West Midlands.

As its name suggests, The Mount occupies the crown of a hill and consequently has a pleasantly light feel. The upper area is level or gently sloping with occasional limestone outcrops, falling away more steeply to the eastern boundary.

The crown is dominated by a stand of Scots pine which progressively blends with a fringe of broadleaves dominated by mature coppiced beech, some of which boast impressive canopy architecture. There are also minor elements of sycamore, oak, birch and ash atop a light shrub understorey. 

The woodland floor is largely ‘clean’ and easily walked, leading up to a more secluded area within the limestone outcrops at the top. There is ready pedestrian access from the village into the northeast corner of the wood and there is also a 4WD access route into the south of the property.

A modest amount of chainsaw time will keep the wood in good heart. There’s also plenty of scope for recreation in this pretty little property.

If It Were Mine

A number of fallen stems will provide generous supplies of firewood, and a light thinning of denser stands would yield considerably more. The Mount invites family recreation and BBQs, and after a hard day’s enjoyment I might then check out the village pub which is a stone’s throw away (literally!).

Residential Planning Permission

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.

Directions & Access

  • Llanferres lies on the A494 midway between Mold and Ruthin.
  • Near a stone bus stop on the north side of Llanferres, head east onto a single track road marked as ‘Unsuitable for heavy good vehicles’.
  • Continue for 0.8 mile, rising up a hill through woodland to enter the village of Maeshafn.
  • Park in the centre of the village near the red phone box and walk south down the entrance drive to the Miners Arms.
  • After the pub and just after some garden sheds (opposite a white cottage) turn right to enter the wood at G. This is a public right of way.
  • Safety Note. The wider woodland has been mined for over 200 years and there may be unknown historic entrances and fissures which are not visible on the surface. There is no definitive plan of mining activity. Please take care when viewing.


  • The east boundary (GH) is the woodland edge fence.
  • The south boundary (FH) is indicated by white-topped posts.
  • The north and west boundary (FG) is the south and east side of an unsurfaced track indicated periodically by orange-topped posts.
