Description

Sturdy Wood lies on the east side of a substantial broadleaf woodland in the heart of the Clwydian Range ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. It is just south of the attractive village of Maeshafn and about an hour by car from Manchester and Liverpool.

It occupies an east-facing slope which falls away in a series of folds and bluffs to a disused quarry near its base. The sheltered site and lime-rich soils are ideal for the beech stems which dominate the wood, one or two of which are of significant stature. Other species present include ash, sycamore, birch, rowan, hazel, hawthorn and Scots pine. Most of these trees are 30-40 years of age but there are also some younger pole-stage stems in the sub-canopy.

Sturdy Wood is well served by an excellent hard track suitable for 2WD which gives access to the entire top west side of the wood. There is a splendid old beech tree on level ground near the northwest corner of the wood which would be an ideal spot for camping and barbeques and which is easily accessed on foot over a clean forest floor from the track above.

The varied landform and proximity of the quarry is reflected in the ticket price. Nonetheless this entry-level property offers significant privacy and amenity, along of course with plentiful supplies of wood-fuel. This combination has broad appeal so if this meets your budget we recommend early viewing.

NOTE: This area has been mined for over 200 years and there are a number of unfenced mine entrances and fissures. Sturdy Wood also contains some steep bluffs. Please take appropriate care when viewing and keep back from any unfenced hazards. Do not cross the lower east fence as there are substantial drops beyond.

If It Were Mine

Camping and firewood are a given. I might also create a few small openings in the canopy to enable planting of a wider range of native species. Oak is always welcome!

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.

Directions & Access

From the west

  • From Ruthin head east on A494 for about 5 miles to the village of LLanferres.
  • As you leave the village take the first turning right (just before a small stone bus shelter) onto a small single track road signed as ‘Unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles’.
  • Continue 0.8 mile to the village of Maeshafn. As you enter the village, about 30 metres after the Maeshafn sign, turn sharp right onto the drive for Pentre Cerrig (point A on the plan below).
  • Continue on this drive for ¼ mile until you see a forest gate on your left side (B) with a Woods4Sale sign. Please park in the lay-by opposite the gate and continue on foot.
  • Enter the forest at this gate and walk along the main track for about 700 metres then fork left uphill at C.
  • Follow the track east for a further 420 metres (up, along and down), then turn left (north) at D.
  • Continue a further 200 metres or so and Sturdy Wood is on your right beginning at a blue-topped post.
  • If you see a conspicuous stone cairn on the right you have just gone past the wood.

Please take appropriate care when viewing and keep back from any unfenced hazards. Do not cross the lower east fence as there are substantial drops beyond.

From the east

  • At the start of the A55 take the A494 west (junction 33b).
  • By-pass Mold and then leaving the by-pass follow the A494 signed for Ruthin.
  • Continue for one mile and then turn left onto the minor county road signed for Maeshafn.
  • Continue for 1.2 miles then turn right into the village of Maeshafn at a small grass triangle.
  • Pass through the village and take the private drive for Pentre Cerrig on the left side just before leaving the village (A).
  • Continue on this drive for ¼ mile until you see a forest gate on your left side (B) with a Woods4Sale sign.
  • Please park in the lay-by opposite the gate and continue on foot as per directions from the west (above).

Please take appropriate care when viewing and keep back from any unfenced hazards. Do not cross the lower east fence as there are substantial drops beyond.

Boundaries

  • The west boundary (EF) is the east side of the hard track.
  • The north boundary (FG) is marked by a line of blue-topped posts and blue spots on trees.
