Coed Pant-Du occupies the southeast shoulder of Big Covert, a beech forest in the heart of the Clwydian Range ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. This secluded woodland incorporates a wide range of habitats, terrains and features including some notable open-canopy mature beech, limestone knolls, mid-slopes of mixed hardwoods and some beautiful views.
The upper northwest section of the wood is punctuated by limestone outcrops at the edge of the Big Covert escarpment. Tree cover here is a broad mixture of mid-rotation hardwoods plus larch and pine. A brief scramble to the top of the highest knoll reveals a gem of a picnic spot with scattered craggy pines, a dry forest floor and a beautiful framed outlook across the valley to Bryn Alyn.
The eastern section of Coed Pant-Du is of moderate convoluted slopes sweeping down to the valley floor, punctuated by occasional limestone crags. The woodland cover is predominantly maturing mixed hardwoods including birch, oak and sycamore with occasional holly, ash and rowan. Amidst these stems are some magnificent mature beech trees with wide-spreading canopies occupying up to ¼ acre each.
The southwest corner overlies a steep south-facing slope with localised patches of limestone scree. The slope is lightly-stocked with Scots pine, larch and occasional hardwoods. Towards the base this gives way to more densely-stocked mixed woodland and a stand of Douglas fir.
The wood is served by a well-established hard track to the north side from which a number of paths and trails lead into the wood. The road outside the south boundary is a Byway Open to All Traffic.
It takes under an hour to get from the bustle of Manchester to the tranquillity of Coed Pant-Du. It is unequivocally a fun wood with amenity and recreation writ large all over it, and whilst the terrain presents management challenges in some areas, the rewards of ownership are self-evident.
If It Were Mine
Some of the conifer areas would benefit from a light thin and I’d also look into marketing the stand of Douglas fir at the base. But most of all I would enjoy the unrivalled amenity afforded by the private grassy knoll overlooking the valley to Bryn Alyn which the vendor says is a fabulous camping spot.

Directions & Access
From the west
- From Ruthin head east on A 494 for about 5 miles to the village of LLanferres.
- As you leave the village take the first turning right (just before a small stone bus shelter) onto a small single track road signed as ‘Unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles’.
- Continue 0.8 mile to the village of Maeshafn.
- As you enter the village, about 30 metres after the Maeshafn sign, turn sharp right onto the drive for Pentre Cerrig (A on the plan).
- Continue on this drive for ¼ mile until you see a forest gate on your left side (B) with a Woods4Sale sign. Please park in the lay-by opposite the gate and continue on foot.
- Enter the forest at this gate and walk up the main track for about 700 metres until the track forks (C).
- Follow the track to the left at which point it starts to climb for about 200 metres to point D.
- Continue on the level for a further 200 metres after which the track goes down a short hill to a junction and turning area (E).
- Coed Pant-Du is now to the right of the main track.
From the east
- At the east end of the A55 take the A494 west (junction 33b).
- By-pass Mold and then leaving the by-pass follow the A494 signed for Ruthin.
- Continue for one mile and then turn left onto the minor county road signed for Maeshafn.
- Continue for 1.2 miles then turn right into the village of Maeshafn at a small grass triangle.
- Pass through the village and take the private drive for Pentre Cerrig on the left side just before leaving the village (A).
- Continue on this drive for ¼ mile until you see a forest gate on your left side (B) with a Woods4Sale sign.
- Please park in the lay-by opposite the gate and continue on foot as per directions from the west (above).
- The north boundary EF is the edge of the hard track.
- The east boundary FGH is a stock fence.
- The south boundary HJ is a stone wall.
- The west boundary EJ is marked periodically by red-topped posts and/or trees marked with a band of red paint.
The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale. They are not let.
- Please note that this area has been mined for over 200 years and there are a number of historic entrances and clefts visible on the surface, some of which have been fenced. There is no definitive plan of mining activity.

Rights Of Way
- A public footpath runs round the east boundary.
- There is a right of was at all times and for all purposes over the route ABCDE.
- A right of way is reserved over the route EF.
- The hard track along the southern boundary HJ is a Byway Open to All Traffic.
