Description
Sietch Wood is set in a secluded part of Sprink Wood, an Ancient Woodland in the eastern Derbyshire Dales. Situated on an undulating but broadly east facing slope, made up of steep section with lovely flat areas dotted throughout.
Tree species include mature oak, ash and sycamore whilst the undergrowth is a mixture of woodland flora along with self-seeded ash, sycamore, and the occasional hazel and holly. Wild grasses and bracken can be found throughout, while bluebells and wild garlic add a touch of colour in the spring months.
This woodland is home to a variety of typical woodland fauna including roe and muntjac deer, grey squirrels and badgers. Where sunlight breaks through the canopy, bracken is often quick to cover the ground (a few flattened sections were noted during our visit which is likely where deer settle for the night), but with a bit of clearance this would make an ideal place to pitch a tent or erect a shelter.
Access is along a recently repaired stone track and should be suitable for most vehicles all year round. From the woodland boundary, foot access is a little challenging, but some ingenuity with a shovel could improve this (or the more adventurous may create vehicle access).
A Forestry Commission Felling Licence is in place, but the majority of the timber related to this has already been removed. A new licence would be required for any further extraction, or felling carried out in line with the 5m³ per calendar quarter rule.
In summary, this is a wonderful Ancient Woodland which has been left to its own devices for a while, but there is plenty of scope to manage this woodland further and create some variety in the ecosystem. Having grown up not far from a similar woodland myself, the opportunities are endless for an adventurous child to explore and have fun.
If It Were Mine
Access within the woodland is fairly limited so creating some easy footpaths to make life easier would be high on the list of things to do. Bringing the kids/grandkids down and letting them explore and get up to mischief would also be great to see. A bit of clearance of the bramble in places would create a great staging area for weekends in the woods.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
