Description
Wigston Wood is part of a larger mixed-species woodland planted in 1997 under the National Forest Tender Scheme. It was a worthy winner of the Silva Award in 2019 and also scooped the National Forest Woodland of the Year in 2021.
The wood lies on level ground in a quiet rural location. The surrounding countryside and villages present a real vision of Olde Englande, yet Birmingham city centre is under an hour by car.
Wigston was established with Corsican pine and a wide range of broadleaved species – a welcome feature in these times of climate uncertainty. It has been studiously maintained since and is a model of farm woodland creation. The stands of Corsican pine are interspersed with birch, oak, cherry and field maple. There are also groups of rowan, ash and willow along with woody shrubs like hawthorn, blackthorn and hazel. A few of the ash are sadly diseased (as they are throughout the country). The ancient hedge along the southwest side of the wood also supports holly, elder and the occasional mature oak.
Thanks to the innate fertility of the site the woods have grown vigorously and are now in early production phase with some adjacent stands already the subject of thinning operations. The Corsican pine is of good form and holds the promise of some milling wood in the future. The current Forestry Commission thinning licence is valid until September 2025.
The woodland and its rides offer excellent prospects for quiet recreation, but you will need to share this with the local wildlife that is increasingly finding refuge here. Birdsong is almost ever-present, and the mew of buzzards is often heard overhead, while muntjac and roe deer graze in the glades below.
Access is via a recently built stone track which leads from the adjacent public road to a private parking spur on the northwest side of the wood.
Wigston Wood demands little in the way of immediate management but has the promise of providing plenty of silvicultural opportunities as the wood matures.
If It Were Mine
The open areas within and around the wood make ideal locations for family enjoyment and camping.
I would remove the diseased ash stems and perhaps tie this in with a first thin of the pine and respacing some of the broadleaves.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
