Description

Located north of the village of Blaisdon, Redpoll Wood forms part of a wider woodland known as Ley Park. Access is via a track and through a locked gate.

Situated over level loamy clay soils, the canopy is a mix of mature oak standards and western hemlock interspersed with younger oak, birch and ash towards the west. The various larger ash scattered throughout Redpoll Wood could offer the new owner instant fuel for the hearth - with a moisture content of less than 20%, ash burns when ‘green’.

In the shrub layer below there is a good quantity of hawthorn, holly, hazel coppice, as well as regenerating Lawson cypress, Norway spruce, Douglas fir and western hemlock; the latter is a decent softwood timber often used for interior woodworking and is a good alternative to the sought-after Douglas fir. Come the warmer times of year, the ground layer is festooned with colourful flowering bluebell, wood anemone, daffodil, primrose and fragrant honeysuckle, all savoured by our essential pollinators.

There is a seasonal pond towards the southern side of the woodland with an earth bund partly flanking the southwestern boundary beyond. The reasonably uncluttered ground layer offers a good location for occasional camping and bushcraft.

Feathered visitors spotted here include green woodpecker, owl, buzzard, greenfinch and numerous harmonious songsters. Deer (muntjac, roe and fallow), wood mouse, badger, fox and brown hare might be seen by a patient observer.

If It Were Mine

I would consider thinning some of the suppressed trees, using the resulting yield for fuel. Some trail cameras mounted to trees might be a nice addition to study wildlife movements. There is ample material here for a bushcraft enthusiast to hone their skills.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
