Swadling Wood is part of a larger mixed-species woodland planted in 1997 under the National Forest Tender Scheme. It was a worthy winner of the Silva Award in 2019 and also scooped the National Forest Woodland of the Year in 2021.

Swadling lies on level ground at the end of a gated track in a quiet rural location. The surrounding countryside and villages present a real vision of Olde Englande, yet Birmingham city centre is under an hour by car.

The wood was established with a mix of conifer and broadleaved species. It has been studiously maintained since and is a model of farm woodland creation. Stands of Corsican pine are supplemented by a healthy range of broadleaves including black poplar, oak, wych elm and silver birch, along with a scattered understorey of shrubs such as hawthorn and hazel. There are also a few ash stems (sadly now diseased as they are throughout Britain).

Thanks to the innate fertility of the site the woods have grown vigorously and are now in early production phase with some adjacent stands already the subject of thinning operations. The Corsican pine is of good form and holds the promise of some milling wood in the future. The current thinning licence is valid until September 2025.

The broad grassy rides offer excellent prospects for quiet recreation, but you will need to share this with the local wildlife that is increasingly finding refuge here. Birdsong is almost ever-present, and the mew of buzzards is often heard overhead, while muntjac and roe deer graze in the glades below.

Access is via a newly built stone track which leads from the adjacent public road to a private parking spur at the southwest corner of the wood. Access within the wood is enhanced by two unsurfaced rides.

This bright and attractive woodland ticks a lot of boxes. Conservation, silviculture and quiet enjoyment are all in prospect here.

If It Were Mine

My first job would be to remove the remaining tree tubes.

The pines are ready for a first thin, while respacing some of the broadleaves and removing the few ash present would help to fill my log store.

The broad southern ride is an excellent spot to catch the evening sun and enjoy a BBQ. It also makes for a great camping spot.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
