Description

Conveniently located between Gloucester and Cheltenham, Willow Wood forms part of a larger gated woodland and offers a superb opportunity for a weekend forester.

Situated over fairly rocky clays that slope gently north, the lofty woodland canopy comprises a blend of ash, oak, beech, birch and horse chestnut. A smattering of conifer is also present, namely Lawson cypress and Scots pine. Within the shrub layer below is hazel coppice, holly, field maple and emerging ash regeneration. A new custodian, perhaps aided by a management plan, might wish to extract some fuel from the stems - the current owner has to some extent taken advantage of this for domestic purposes.

Ancient Woodland indicators include bluebells, wood anemone, dog’s mercury, red campion and primrose, creating a delightful scene in the warmer months.

There is a grassy open area near the centre that would be ideal for bushcraft. A small pond found nearby occasionally hosts frogspawn and aquatic insects. Positioning a bench near the southern boundary means that one might enjoy farmland views on a warm clear day.

Feathered visitors such as chaffinch, treecreeper, woodpecker, owl and numerous friendly songbirds have been seen and heard in this peaceful location. Woodland mammals include both muntjac and roe deer, wood mouse, badger, hare and fox.

If It Were Mine

Bushcraft activities would be high on the list here. I would also be very keen to camp overnight, possibly towards the south of the woodland where it is more secluded and enjoys the rural vista. Some birdboxes would be a nice idea to further entice the woodland visitors.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.

Directions & Access

  • From junction 11A of the M5, head east along the A417 following signs for Cirencester and Oxford.
  • After 3.7 miles and as you reach the top of the slope, take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A436, sign posted to Stow-on-the-Wold and Oxford.
  • Continue along the A436 and soon you will pass the junction on the left for Ullenwood and Leckhampton and then the sign for ‘Cotswold District’ as you approach some woodland on the right.
  • 225 metres after the Ullenwood and Leckhampton turning, there is sharp turning on the right into the woodland (point X on the plan below).
  • There is a triangular roundabout warning sign next to it (albeit slight grubby!), with a short ramp of track that nearly doubles back onto the main road, along with a steel gate set back from the road.
  • Please park in a safe place not obstructing the busy road.
  • Walk up the short section of track and climb over the gate (sorry we do not provide keys for viewings) and bear left into Willow Wood (point A), indicated by the woodland name sign and our Woods4Sale sign attached to it.

  • The northwestern boundary AB is indicated by blue paint on occasional wooden posts and trees, BC is indicated by a dilapidated stone wall with the main road beyond.
