Description

A delightful mix of broadleaves, Hide Wood sits within an Ancient Woodland known as Great Farley. This tranquil wood is set in the gentle hills of rural Worcestershire but is only a short drive to the M5 and slightly further afield, Birmingham.

Access is through a secure gated entrance and along a hard stone surface track that gently descends into the woodland. A softer track runs along the eastern edge and there are a number of areas where a car can be pulled off the track to allow parking within the woodland boundary. Access should be suitable for 2WD year-round.

Set on a broadly flat aspect, Hide Wood is composed of primarily young silver birch, oak, rowan and  holly with mature oak and sweet chestnut on the edges (some of the sweet chestnut were coppiced long ago and are now presented as large stools). Under the canopy of the trees you will find bracken and open areas with wild grasses and bluebells in the spring.

Hide Wood is the perfect place for those looking for a quiet and secluded retreat for amenity and leisure purposes but that could also provide a steady supply of high quality firewood or a lovely conservation project for an aspiring forester (or both!). The trees would welcome a thin to favour the best form and there could be scope to introduce other species to increase the mix.

If It Were Mine

I would look to thin the birch, favouring either the trees of good form or the other species (rowan, oak, sweet chestnut etc). In some of the more open areas, I would consider thinning a wider area and plant up some more trees, which could be either the same species as already here or introduce some others that would grow well, such as cherry, wild service tree or hazel.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
