Description
Weaver Wood occupies part of the south facing slope of the historic Hunt Hill Woodland. Situated in the midst of the Cheshire countryside, it is only 5 miles from Northwich and a short drive from Chester. The wood is easily reached along a recently upgraded stoned track which provides excellent year-round access. This track is found off a lane just a few minutes from the A533 between Northwich and Chester. Traffic noise is minimal, making the woodland a very tranquil place to spend the long summer days.
Hunt Hill Woodland is believed to have been part of the Wilbraham family estate that owned a lot of the surrounding land in the late 18th century. The head of the family, George Wilbraham, was a keen huntsman and this woodland is understood to have been kept and managed as their hunting grounds.
Weaver Wood is on a gentle slope and is made up of mature sycamore, oak and beech trees - there are some fantastic looking examples of each species that are over 150 years old. Growing up underneath is a mixture of young birch, chestnut and hazel with the occasional holly tree.
The wood is bisected by a year round stream, screened by flourishing rhododendron, which were heavy with purple flowers on our visit. With a bit of clearing, perhaps cutting a few paths down to the stream and clearing out either side, this could be a beautiful environment for a variety of plants and animals, as well as a very secluded location to pitch a tent.
During the day, the woodland is visited by squirrels, rabbits and hares, countless songbirds and occasional buzzards surfing some overhead air currents. At night, there is a local family of badgers that forage in the wider woodland.
If It Were Mine
I would firstly cut up and split the timber already on site, stack them nearby and leave to dry and season for the following winter’s wood store at home.
Clearing some paths through the rhododendron would create some very private camping spots and continuing to open up spaces down to the stream would allow other plant species to grow and make for a lovely setting.
There is a naturally occurring spring in a cleared section of rhododendron that with a little work and imagination could be turned into a delightful pond feature.
Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
