Nickel Bank is a delightful and diverse woodland set amongst a wider forest within the tranquil Shropshire countryside. Some three miles south of the M54 and a short distance east of historic Shrewsbury, this mainly broadleaf wood is ideally located and forms part of an Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland.

This distinctive wood slopes discreetly from the east where there are some impressive examples of mature oak, chestnut, birch and rowan.  The soil is fertile loamy clay, supporting a dense understory of holly and hazel which provide shelter for the abundant fallow deer population.

Sightings of local birdlife such as song thrush, warbler, woodpecker and tawny owl are commonplace in the area.

The interesting undulating topography of the wood offers dramatic and changeable woodland with plenty to explore. Some imposing mature trees are mixed with abundant numbers of smaller birch and rowan that would welcome a light thin to help develop the woodland further, making excellent firewood for the hearth or even some timber for crafts.

Nickel Bank benefits from excellent access and parking via a newly stoned track that is suitable year-round for a 2WD vehicle.

If It Were Mine

The trees would welcome thinning, opening up some of the holly and bringing light onto the woodland floor to encourage regeneration. There is a Forestry Commission thinning licence in place allowing around 1 in 4 or 5 trees to be harvested. I would seek to make a few clearings, put up some deer fencing and see what trees emerge from the soil.

I would use the timber produced as firewood or even make some charcoal to fuel summer BBQs in the open spaces within the woodland.
