Chaffinch Copse is part of a larger forested area located just south of the market town of Tring in rural Hertfordshire. It is accessed via a locked gate and along a stone track, a short way off the council road.

The entirety of the woodland is supported by lush loam over clay soils with the topography to the northeast being of a gentle undulating nature with some interesting hollows - these are plausibly historic clay excavations, as referenced by ‘Kiln’ Lane on the woodland approach.  The southwestern side of the woodland is a more level terrain.

The lofty mature canopy in the northeast is a composition of oak standards, beech, sweet chestnut, birch, cherry and a smattering of Norway spruce. Moving southwest you will find larch, Scots pine, ash and further oak. Occupying the shrub layer is a good amount of holly, hawthorn, hazel and younger specimens of beech. There is certainly some scope here for a new custodian to fell and mill on-site a stem or two for a range of uses - beech is suitable for both furniture and fuel.

Designated as a Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS), the ground layer come spring has splashes of colour from primrose, snowdrop and herb-Robert, along with lush grasses and springy moss. Any of the open areas would be perfect for both camping and bushcraft, with plenty of material to hand for the latter.

The feathered population includes red kite, owl, green woodpecker, robin and many harmonious songsters. Mammals spotted here are deer (roe and muntjac), badger, fox, hare and wood mouse to name a few.

If It Were Mine

I would definitely mount a few trail cameras to trees to see what other woodland mammals might be visiting.  A gentle thin of the declining lower trees should favour some of the better stems for the future. Den making and camping adventures with family and friends would be a lot of fun!

Residential Planning Permission

You are extremely unlikely to get residential planning permission for this woodland.

Directions & Access

  • From the centre of Wigginton village at the war memorial, church and crossroads, head south on Chesham Road passing The Greyhound pub and continue though and out of the village, towards Cholesbury and Hawridge.
  • After a mile, you will pass a white gate lodge and estate entrance with tall gates and iron fencing on the left, continue for a further 175 metres and then turn right onto Cholesbury Road, signposted to Cholesbury and Hawridge.
  • Continue along Cholesbury Road for 0.8 miles, and turn right at the grassed triangular junction onto Kiln Road, signposted to Hastoe and Tring.
  • Soon after you will see an access ahead into the woodland for a Public Byway, however bear right, staying on Kiln Road.
  • Drive past 2 steel gates into the woodland on the left, until you arrive at a 3rd steel gate with some post and rail fence either side with a small red triangle on the rail (point A on the plan). If you get to a 4th steel gate opposite the entrance to Kiln Farm and a large Scots pine, you have gone too far.
  • Please park in a suitable place not obstructing the road or any access.
  • Climb over the gate (sorry we do not provide keys for viewings) and continue along the stone track into the woodland.
  • After 70 metres you will arrive at the woodland on the left (point B), indicated by blue paint on wooden posts and our Woods4Sale sign on a tree beyond.


  • The northwest boundary is the outside edge of the track.
  • The northeast boundary is indicated by blue paint on occasional wooden posts and trees.
  • The southwest boundary is indicated by pink paint on occasional wooden posts and trees.
  • The southeast boundary is indicated by green paint on occasional wooden posts and trees.
