Description

Situated a short distance northwest of Norwich – the ancient city which dates back to 60 AD - Triangle Wood is part of a wider wooded area of rural Norfolk and was historically managed by the Forestry Commission.

Located on level loamy freely draining soils, the mature canopy predominantly comprises large sweet chestnut coppice, oak standards, rowan (a somewhat rare species found in areas of lowland England such as East Anglia), ash, sycamore, Scots pine, yew and occasional Norway spruce. An interesting and lush shrub layer consists of thicket stage rowan, along with hazel coppice, birch, holly, western hemlock and younger Scots pine. In addition, there are a number of magnificent veteran trees dotted throughout. Ground cover includes, primrose, foxglove, bracken and heather. Fragrant honeysuckle is found on many of the trees - a welcome nourishment for our essential pollinators.

Several open areas could certainly be utilised for camping, bushcraft or even the on-site milling of a chestnut stem or two. A variety of feathered guests include lesser redpoll, skylark, long-tailed tit, green woodpecker and many harmonious songsters. Mammals include deer (roe, fallow and muntjac), wood mouse, hare and fox.

The woodland is encompassed on three sides by earth bunds with access roads beyond them, potentially offering good access for light management by the new custodian.

If It Were Mine

I would consider an official vehicular access into the woodland, perhaps with a gate for security. A stem or two of the large chestnut coppice could be felled and milled on-site – ideal for fence posts and logs for the hearth. The rich understory of rowan offers some nice privacy for camping adventures with any of the veteran trees providing an atmospheric setting for night-time storytelling.

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
